Reseeding Your Lawn

By Ben Moore

If your lawn is the love of your life, then this one is for you. When your lawn looks like its dying and you think it needs to be completely resurfaced, then you could be in luck. Maybe its just waiting for you to start reseeding it. This is definitely true if your lawn is a patchwork of healthy and weathered grass. If you compare the costs and time involved with replacing your lawn and simply reseeding you its needed you quickly realize that reseeding is a no brainer. The best time for you to reseed your lawn would be in fall and spring but reseeding can be done in any season. When you look at your lawn in fall and you think that it needs a little help then reseed right away or it will get worse during the winter giving you more work to do in spring.

What is great about reseeding is that you dont need to be a botanist or even an avid gardener to successfully reseed your lawn. Reseeding a lawn can be done by anyone who can follow directions and read labels.

The first thing you should do is apply a weed and feed, preferably a liquid weed and feed. After two weeks you need to mow your lawn. You will than want to rake your lawn thoroughlyif you can get hold of a power rake that would be ideayour lawn to remove debris and prickles.

Now to buy some seeds. Please Please Please do not buy seeds simply because they are the cheapest you can find, always buy what is most suited to your property and climate. Search the internet, read the labels, ask the people at the nursery for advice, choosing the right seeds can be the difference between success and failure.

After you have bought your seed, its time to prepare your soil. Loosen the soil where you plan to plans your seeds buy giving it a quick rake and ensuring that all the weeds have been removed. Now you can plant your seed in the prepared spots in your lawn and cover it with straw, soil or newspaper to keep it in place.

If you have your seeds unprotected they will quickly be blown away and your efforts wasted. Then, you need to give your seed extra attention. Water it often when the sun is up high and try to keep the soil from drying out. You can then apply a starter fertilizer when the seed starts to germinate.

You will want to stay clear of pre-emergent weed control since they will prevent the growth of all seeds including the grass seeds you have just finished planting. Be patient in trying to grow your new lawn as it will take a whole season for them to be fully grown and look like the rest of your lawn grass. But its a lot cheaper and easier to do than replanting your whole lawn. When you are reseeding parts of your lawn, you should not forget to take care of the rest of your lawn. Continue using weed killers, fertilizers, and keep watering and mowing it. In order to prevent your lawn getting into a bad condition, it is good to reseed it once a year.

There are a number of reasons why lawns needs reseeding. One of which is they do not get enough water, they dried out because of the weather, or they do not get enough nutrients because of the weeds. Thus, keeping your lawn healthy by using the right amount of fertilizers and watering it every day would prevent it from thinning or having bare spots. During summer let you lawn grow a little longer and raise the blades on your mower so you dont cut it too short, grass cut too short can easily become dehydrated by the summer sun. Remember that there would still be areas that would require reseeding but this will lessen over time. Grasses are not suited to climate in which they have been planted which is why it needs a lot of attention and care just to make it healthy.
